VooDoo Nights by silvertales VooDoo Nights by silvertales
"VooDoo Nights" is what finally emerged from one of my Sketch-A-Day pieces back in January. Once I started sketching her, I knew, eventually, I'd want to finish here once I figured out exactly how I wanted to go about it.

After tweaking her post a bit, correcting some flaws, and fleshing her out some, I ended up going with a more "traditional" Art Nouveau feel.

In the end, she ends up looking like a poster advert for absinthe, or for exotic nights in the Louisiana bayou.

She's mixed media: ink, Copic marker, tiny bits of white ink,
11x14 on paris bleedproof smooth vellum.

Prints and the original are available. Please note me if interested. :)

Hi! I'm glad you like "VooDoo Nights," she's one of my personal favorites! I'm glad she went to auction at MobiCon, as I haven't done that con for long.

I do have another print of this piece available if you were still interested.

Thank you so much! I find my style rapidly absorbs nouveau elements and I like them... it feels like a natural evolution to me. :)

As for the greens... I discovered I don't use a lot of green, and the side bars of VooDoo Nights were created to fix that. :)

This ended up turning out just as awesome as I had expected, but not in the way that at first came to mind when I saw the sketch!

What strikes me first and foremost is the richness of the piece, the depth and vibrancy of the colors, and then the use of the particular colors you chose and how they interact with each other. Green and purple..if I recall correctly, those were very significant colors in the Voodoo/Vodou religion.

Of course, next, I'm hit with this very relaxed and provocative figure whose elements and aspects make me feel tense (in a good way), like I'm about to see something that explodes my head or something that will grab hold of me if I look away.. The eyes definitely have a mesmerizing effect, and the use of the knife is both tantalizing and ominous.

The clothing is just as relaxed and provocative as the figure, and oh wow the detail on that hiked skirt is just awesome. In fact, I have to mention how I really love how you used the green tinting to add depth to the whites, but also to tie it in with the green border as well as her eyes, like there is something glowing around her but it's not her. The smoke rising behind her further enhances this mysterious unknown element that interacts so heavily with the viewer, and plays upon a lot of the myths and legends that popular culture maintain about the religion.

That's the interesting thing about this piece, actually. I can't claim to have ever been a part of the religion that inspired this piece, but I don't sense any disrespect at all in this piece, neither towards the viewer nor towards actual practitioners. This is also not a parody, nor is it an attempt to portray any specific aspect of the religion, remaining an inspired piece without being a mockery or a documentary. I'm really impressed at how you kept all of the really mysterious aspects of the religion that pop culture embraces and cherishes, yet you definitely studied and made specific and serious choices about how you would handle this piece and how you would employ real aspects of the religion.

One final note: My eye continues to be drawn back to the figure and specifically to her face and especially her eyes, but I'm not locked in there and am able to freely wander about the composition without feeling like I'm missing anything. There's PLENTY to see throughout the entire piece, with not even one square inch devoid of interesting detail. This is really great composition, even though it is so monolithically centered and graphical in overall layout. I think that your strength in use of color, the use of the shapes of the skulls and the swampy stuff at the top and the smoke all come together to create just the right ambiance, with the figure standing in the middle of it, within it, yet it's like she's free to step right out of the frame, so I don't feel that she's locked in or bound tightly to the composition.

This turned out really great, I look forward to seeing the original, if you are taking it to Metro! ^.^

Oh wooooow, this is awesome. Your marker pieces are truly magnificent, lady. The whole thing is wonderful, but I especially like the side panels of the skulls, and the way you've drawn the smoke in them and in the center. Your use of green in the shadowing of the whites is also a very smart touch, and really pulls the whole thing together.

Will you be at Otakon this year?

It's linked off the Artist Alley Map.

What I want to know is what the hours for Thursday check in are for Artist alley, and whether or not artists will have our own line for con pre-reg like the vendors do, or at least the chance to check in for the artist alley by just using our IDs and not needing the badge so we can do that first and not have to trudge through the con reg line on Thursday with all our crap.

Ah, thank you! Looks like I'm at U13... not a great spot, but not as bad as it could be either, by a long shot.

Generally I believe the Thursday alley checkin hours are maybe early evening until 9 or 10? And unless something has changed, we have to go through the prereg line like everybody else, then down to the alley to check in there and get alley ribbons to add to our badges. It's dumb and a pain in the butt. Sometimes you can cut through the reg lines and go straight to another desk that has alley member badges, but I don't remember that working in the last couple years, sadly. -____-

It really is dumb... especially considering con pre-reg is open an hour later than the alley check-in. At least, it should be allowed for artists to check in, provided we have ID on us... it's not like they don't have our information anyway... they look it up when we check in!

Actually, what would be nice is if artist and vendors could have the same pre-reg line. Vendors get one... why can't artists be added?

Or, better, yet, if the con mailed vendor and AA badges out before the con, like MegaCon does.
